The burial chapel (dedicated to St.Michael and All Angels) is consecrated Church of England. The burial chapel has been in continuous use since it was built and houses an historic set of stained glass windows (c.1931) by the artist A J Davies, and a reproduction William Morris tapestry.

Services may be booked in half-hour slots, but can be extended if required. Seating is available for 60 people, with ample standing room if needed. The seating is arranged on either side of the chapel with a central isle, but can be rearranged, as required.

Music can be provided either on the chapel’s organ, or tapes/CD’s which are played via the chapel’s music system. Live music is welcomed. Recorded music is operated by the organist/funeral director from the rear of the chapel, or a member of staff can be available on request. The minister is amplified via the music system, and an induction loop is fitted in the building for the benefit of hearing aid users.

Decoration in the chapel is that of a traditional Church of England, comprising an altar, lectern, stained glass windows and other secular ornaments. These decorations are not removable, but families of different faiths have the option to hold their burial services in the non-denominational crematorium chapel, if desired.

Burial is granted for a private grave for a period of 50 years.

In addition to traditional graves, a limited number of vault spaces are also available. Vaults accommodate up to 8 people and larger memorials may be erected.

Lawn Graves*

In 2005 East London Cemetery initiated a new class of graves in a lawn section. In this area the grave owner does not have the rights to erect memorials over the full area of the grave. The only memorial permitted will be a headstone 3’ high by 2’ wide by 3” thick (dimensions above ground). At the base of the headstone a memorial vase block is permitted. Any flowers placed on the grave will be removed two weeks after the funeral. Any subsequent flowers must be within the memorial vase block. In order to maintain quality of both the grave stones and the workmanship for installation these will be available only through Grange Memorials, which will include a 25 year guarantee on the stones and workmanship but excluding inscriptions.

Lawn graves are a type of purchased grave where an Exclusive Right of Burial is granted, and four interments can be accommodated. Following a burial, the grave is turfed, and a headstone memorial can be purchased. Large memorials with kerbs are not permitted and no other adornments are allowed.

Common*

Common graves are those where the Cemetery retains the Rights of Burial and unrelated people will be buried in the same grave. Simple headstone memorials are permitted on common graves.

Baby Section*

A part of the common grave area of the cemetery has been allocated to burials of babies. Graves are allocated to a single family under a 50 year lease. Memorials typically take the form of small headstones and kerbs.
