Gardens of Remembrance

There are various Gardens of Remembrance within the grounds of the East London Cemetery which are suitable for the committal of cremated remains.

The Garden of Remembrance is a popular area of the Cemetery. Since 1954 when the Crematorium opened, many people have chosen to have a rose tree plot in the gardens, as a memorial to a loved one. Originally the garden occupied a small area, and was in circular form. However, over the years the demand for plots increased and since the early 1960's the plots have been arranged in rows, which provides easier access to the plots, and identification for those visiting.

The plots may be leased for a seven, fourteen, twenty-eight or fifty year term, and the initial price includes the provision of a decorative marble surround and a memorial plaque displaying the deceased's name, age, dates, and relationships. At the end of the term the person responsible for the plot has the option to renew the lease for another term.

The rose tree plots are divided into "gardens", currently numbered 1 to 6, and in turn these gardens are divided into rows. The boundary of the plot is limited to a certain size, because of space available, but within the plot people are able to add other types of memorial, such as flower vases, small books, stone tablets, etc. Many people also like to plant out bulbs and bedding plants to add colour throughout the year.

The other significant feature of the plots is the rose tree itself. All the plots contain a

standard rose tree which is planted by the cemetery staff. Although the families who tend the plots are responsible for taking care of the rose tree, the cemetery acknowledges that standard trees are susceptible to damage and are difficult to look after. Because of this, the cemetery replaces dead trees on request during the seven year term.

Above Ground Ashes Graves

A new addition to the Gardens of Remembrance is the Above Ground Ashes Graves. Set aside and designed to compliment the existing gardens, this area incorporates plots on a fifty year lease and the provision of a miniature headstone and kerb set (as pictured) specially constructed to hold up to four sets of cremated remains within its base. The granite memorials are available in a range of colours (black, blue pearl, red, and a range of greys). Additional vases and other items, such as engraved motifs and photo plaques, can be incorporated into the design of the memorial as desired.

There are currently two standard ornamental gardens within the cemetery grounds, one behind the memorial wall, and the other nearer the office on the Southern boundary. These gardens provide a dignified and floral setting for the committal of a loved ones cremated remains, the cost of which is included in the East London Crematorium cremation fee. In addition, four new "seasonal" gardens have been added (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) for the committal of cremated remains from the Crematorium. Both areas are communal areas, and no individual plaques or additional memorials are permitted in these areas.

A new Garden of Remembrance has recently been laid out with memorial kerb blocks with integral flower vases, and engraved plaques. The kerbs can be dedicated for periods of seven, fourteen, twenty eight and fifty year terms, and the cremated remains of a loved one can be scattered behind the memorial. The plaque is an engraved mock granite material available in a range of colours (blue, green, brown) and can incorporate simple text, motifs or ceramic photographs.
